Beautiful People: March 2015

Beautiful People is a monthly linkup hosted by Sky and Cait (from Further Up and Further In and Paper Fury, respectively). Each month, they post a list of questions that writers can use to interview their characters. For more info, and to join the fun, click over to their blogs!

I’ve actually interviewed several characters this month, from two different WIPs. But the one I’ll be featuring on my blog is the leading lady from one of my newer projects.

Her name, for now, is Aveirna.

1.) What is their secret desire?
Aveirna wants to be free. She has been guarding herself for so long, and she would relish being able to close her eyes and not worry if someone will kill her before she opens them.

2.) What is the best and brightest moment they experience during the story?
Probably humiliating Tieldyn. He’s a prideful person, and Aveirna doesn’t mind seeing him outdone by her in a battle (of blade or wits).

3.) What are the emotional places your characters are afraid to go?
Aveirna does not like to grieve. She avoids it in whatever ways she can, though her rate of success is not as high as she would prefer.

4.) Is there a place/city/room where they will never go? Why?
Aveirna made a promise to herself never to visit her parents’ graves (if they even have them). It is closely linked with the promise her parents demanded of her when she was much younger: should something happen, she was never to try to save them.

They didn’t want her to risk her life for them, and though it was a promise with which she never felt comfortable, she plans to keep it.

5.) If they were permanently leaving town, what would they easily throw out? What would they refuse to part with? Why?
She could easily throw out anything which might weigh or slow her down.

She would refuse to throw out her coat. It was the last thing her parents gave her, and she has mended it many times over the years, for the sole purpose of keeping it.

6.) What do they want (consciously and tangibly)?
A place to call home. She wants a place with walls behind which she can feel safe; she wants a room where she can sleep without fear of being killed.

And she wants a place where, one day, she could maybe have a family again.

7.) On the other hand: what do they need (on the emotional, subconscious level)?
To be able to trust someone. She hasn’t been able to fully trust someone in a long time.

8.) If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be?
When it comes to physical traits, she would change her height. She’s tall, and she isn’t overly fond of how it makes her stand out. Otherwise, she would like to seem a little less intimidating around unthreatening people.

9.) What is the most humiliating event of their life?
When she was seventeen and first heard the whispers about what people thought of her. She was too upset to confront the man who’d spoken, and sometimes she wishes she hadn’t been. Mostly, she hates the whispers because she can’t prove to herself or anyone whether they are false or true.

10.) What things do they turn to when they need a bit of hope?
Aveirna hums the songs her mother used to sing to her when she was a small girl. She also looks at the drawing that her father had commissioned of the three of them.

So there you have this month's edition of Beautiful People

  1. She sounds like a cool character! Even though I don't know what her plotline is, I know that I would sympathize with her as she went through her emotional journey as well. :)

    1. Yay! I'm always unsure whether my characters feel as real to other people as they do to me when I write about them.

Honestly, I'm still figuring out the plot. :) The BP questions this month really helped with that, though, so maybe I can figure it out soon.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Oh, I love the idea of her keeping her coat and mending it over and over. Probably because I quite like mending things... Does she try to make it still look like the same coat, or does it subtly change over time, with -say- a different lining, or patches, or mismatched buttons....?

    1. Ooh, great question! :) I think to begin with, she wanted to keep it as close as she could to its original look, but over time the lack of resources has made that difficult. It has patches, but she tries to keep them in a similar color.

I really like the idea of a different lining too...

      Thanks for stopping by! :)

  3. She sounds like a great character! I especially liked the answer to number 2... it made me laugh. :) ~Andrea
