Novel Plot Week: Week Three Recap

And so, the trio of Novel Plot Weeks ends.

This week, I focused on Songbirds. It’s a futuristic fantasy about a special military group and a political mystery. I’ve had the idea in my head for less time than either of the previous two NPW projects, but it came together with surprising ease.

Here’s how the week went:

Monday:
Character day!

I’d already had a notebook from earlier in the year when I’d done some scribblings about the main characters, so I had a decent starting point. I changed some details and added more.

The only major problem was that I kept accidentally changing one character’s name.

And I also confirmed that I’ll be trying to write this one in dual first-person POVs. (One would be the President’s daughter and the other is a commander in the Songbirds division.)

Tuesday:
Plot day.

My opening scenes are ready. I know the POV, the events, and the locations. I also have several points for the book’s end mapped out, though they could change some according to what actually happens during the drafting phase.

I have a list of things that I think will happen during the book’s middle, but none of them are set in stone. So, the pantsing part of my brain is happy about having all that space to roam free. :)

Wednesday:
The worldbuilding was pretty easy for this one too. I also figured out some more plot details that were giving me some trouble. Mostly, I worked on naming my main country and some of the major locations from the story.

Thursday:
Putting the playlist together didn’t take much time. Like Roguess, there were already several songs I knew would be on the playlist for Songbirds, so really all I had to do was make a list of them.

Friday:

Even though it was extras day, I didn’t do anything writing-related. Instead, I spent the day with my parents and my sister. We went walking on a nature trail and spent part of the afternoon driving around looking at all the fall colors that we’re finally getting in our area. It’s beautiful!

And there you have it! Out of the three, I feel like this week was the most successful. Songbirds was an idea that I didn’t expect would be easy to prep, but it was probably the easiest of the three.

And my plans for the rest of October are simple. I’m going to finish reading Jane Eyre, choose my NaNo project, and hopefully catch up on some blogging things.

What are your plans for the rest of October?

  1. I'm in total awe at you plotting three different novels in three weeks. That's just awesome!!! I'm so glad to hear it went well. I can't wait to see which one you choose. They all sound fantastic!

  2. Congrats on finishing all your outlining! I hope the decision about which to write is easier now! Plus, you have the added bonus of having your next projects outlines already, right? Can't wait to see what you choose. =)

My October plans are to finish the draft I'm writing (so close to the end!) and finish outlining the book I finally decided on for NaNo. Oh, and eating lots of Halloween candy, can't forget the part.

    1. Thank you! :) I'm pretty sure the project I don't use for November will be one of my Camp NaNo project next year, so it will be a bonus having all that outlining done (unless the story takes a huge turn...which has happened before...)!

Yay! I hope the writing and outlining are going well. :) And the candy is a MUST
