Novel Plot Week: October 2016 Recap

This year’s Novel Plot Week went really well (and mostly according to plan)! The week was pretty busy outside of writing stuff, but overall I was able to complete pretty much everything I wanted to in regards to NaNo prep.

Monday:
This was set aside for character notes. I was able to complete basic info pages for the main characters and some important side characters. Some things I already knew, but other facts were kind of surprising. I also figured out the past career for one character and how exactly it influenced who they will be in the story (goals, perception—things like that).

Tuesday:
Set aside for plotting, this day didn’t go quite as I expected it to. I’d planned to make a chapter outline for Tolling Bells, but after several attempts, it just wasn’t working. So, I have a list of potential scenes and plot points, and we’ll see how many of those actually make their way into the book!

Wednesday:
Settings. Tolling Bells is set in Philadelphia, and I spent a lot of time over the summer researching the city and the medical community there in the nineteenth century. I spent Wednesday looking at an 1850s map of the city to get a general idea of where certain things were. I also researched more about the hospitals and cemeteries.

Thursday:
A day set aside for additional research. I continued looking things from the day before, as well as row houses and some more medical stuff.

Friday:
I set Friday aside for miscellaneous stuff, like playlists, additional research, and other random things. My basic playlist only took a few minutes to put together (I’ll adapt it more once the writing begins and I figure out what works and what doesn’t). I also finished up some of the last research bits I needed (as far as first drafts go), and transferred most of my loose-leaf notes into their designated sections in my notebook.

Overall, Novel Plot Week was a success this year. I feel pretty good about starting Tolling Bells on Tuesday, though I’m sure there will be a few things left to Google or scenes I might need to rethink.

How is your NaNo prep going?

  1. Hurray! I'm so glad to hear your plotting went well. I admire all that research you did. I'm the worst about not getting around to research...

I'm all plotted for NaNo too, and am so relieved. It took me FOREVER. Lol.

Can you believe NaNo is the day after tomorrow?? :O EEP. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!

Happy NaNo'ing! I hope you have a wonderful one!!!
